Essay Excerpt:

Bobby Jones, the winner of the grand slam, is of course spot on with his quote that “Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course - the distance between your ears.” The first occurrence that made me relax and just have a good time was during a home stretch against a very good rival team. I started the first hole with a par and thought I was riding home to a great round; however, consecutive bogeys on the next two holes had me thinking my round was slipping away. Here my mind was dictating what my swing was doing and causing me to swing off tempo. This is when I decided to just forget about everything I knew about golf and just swing. Believe it or not, it worked; by not letting my mind hit the ball, I birdied the next two holes and was back to even par. With my mind turned off, I bogeyed the next hole, but recovered by paring the last three holes and shooting a personal best one over 36 to medal and lead the team to victory.
